ANDREAS WITTMANN studied oboe and conducting in Munich and Berlin. In Munich, he received lessons from Prof. Hermann Michael and was repeatedly an active participant in conducting courses led by Sergiu Celibidache. From 1985 to 1986, he received a scholarship from the Karajan Academy, followed immediately by an engagement with the Berlin Philharmonic. There, his early work was especially shaped by his collaboration with Herbert von Karajan.<\/p>\n

In 1988, together with four of his colleagues, he founded the Philharmonic Wind Quintet Berlin, with which he performed in many countries around the world for over 30 years and made numerous recordings for the Swedish label BIS.<\/p>\n

As a principal oboist, he performed for several years with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra under such renowned conductors as Giuseppe Sinopoli, James Levine, and Daniel Barenboim. In addition, he maintains an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and pedagogue both in Germany and abroad.<\/p>\n

For more than 25 years, he has been a lecturer at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, which he directed from 2013 to 2015.<\/p>\n

As a conductor, he has worked with various orchestras, including the Bursa Symphony Orchestra (Turkey), the Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Monterrey (Mexico), and the Orquestra Sinf\u00f4nica da Bahia (Brazil), where he is a regular guest conductor, as well as with the Symphony Orchestra Sinfonia Varsovia (Poland).<\/p>\n

Beginning with the 2025\/2026 season, he will take up the position of Principal Conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, with which he has been closely associated for many years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
